Uniforms

An army uniform is the complete dress of the Polish Armed Forces servicemen, made according to the regulations that specify its pattern, colour, and bearing army insignia. These elements are an outward indication of the soldiers' belonging to the Armed Forces and the respective armed force type.

Currently, there are several types of uniforms in the Polish Army, categorised as follows depending on their use:

1. evening uniforms - only worn by officers according to the custom accepted in the civil environment.

2. basic:

- gala uniform - worn by professional soldiers during celebrations of army and national holidays, visited by the President of Poland, marshals of the Parliament, Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence. Soldiers wear it also duringofficial meetings, other holidays within the Army as well as appointments and decorations of soldiers;

- service dress is worn widespread as a basic form of uniform of professional soldiers and military students on duty;

- service uniform is worn by generals and soldiers of representative semi-units in time of serving and performances during State celebrations;

- battle dress is worn by soldiers during training tasks, which are parts of combat training, and during guarding (internal and garrison);

- working (worn when operating armed equipment, technical equipment and when doing maintenance work);

- special (used when operating equipment that requires protective outfit).

Basic uniforms have the following colours: in land forces - khaki; in air forces and air defence forces - steel; in navy - navy blue and white. Battle dress is in protective colours for all soldiers.

Battle dress is worn by soldiers of coastal units of the Polish Navy during training tasks, which are parts of combat training, and during guarding (internal and garrison).

Headgear

The colour of the garrison cap rim depends on the kind of military forces and service.In the land forces the colours, referring to The Polish Army of the Second Republic, were defined according to the Ministry of National Defence order (dated 2.01.1991).

There are:

- navy blue (referring to the colour of the infantry uniforms from XVIII century), which is worn by: generals, soldiers of armoured units, students of military schools, professional soldiers of law and justice corps, soldiers of the Honour Guard;

- orange (referring to colours of rims on four-cornered caps as well as colours of armoured corps before 1951) which is worn by soldiers of armoured units, reconaissance units and cadets of schools and training centres of these kinds of forces;

- deep green (referring to colours of artillery uniforms from XVII century as well as to colours of rims on four-cornered caps of artillery units before 1951) which is worn by soldiers of missile units, artillery, air defence units and cadets of schools and training centres of these kinds of forces;

- black (referring to colours of edgings and stripes of uniforms of engineering forces from XVII century as well as well as colours of rims on four-cornered caps of engineering units before 1951) which is worn by soldiers of engineering units, anti-chemical defence units, technical safeguard units, cartographical and geodesy service and cadets of the Military Technical Academy, schools and training centres of these kinds of forces;

- sky-blue (referring to colours of edgings and stripes of communication forces from 1919), which is worn by soldiers of communication forces, radio engineering forces, radio electronics and reconaissance forces, cadets of schools and training centres of these kinds of forces;

- cherry-red (referring to colours of rims of medical staff before 1951), which is worn by soldiers of medical staff units, doctors and soldiers from army hospitals and sanatoriums, cadets of the Medical Military Academy, schools and centres of medical training;

- scarlet (referring to colours of edgings and rims of military police before 1939) which is worn by military police and cadets of military police schools and training centres;

- violet (referring to colours of edgings of priesthood service before 1951) which is worn by army chaplains;

- yellow, which is worn by soldiers of the staff of the 1st Warsaw Mechanized Division as well as 1st Warsaw Armoured Brigade.

Nowadays, one wear berets of following colours:

- green - in the Army units;

- black - in tank sub-units, units of 11th Armoured Cavalry Division, on The Faculty of Armour of Stefan Czarnecki Military Academy;

- deep-red - in Airborne and Air Cavalry;

- blue - in Coast Defence;

- crimson - in Military Police;

- brown - in Territorial Defence;

- grey- in Special Unit GROM.

The Land Forces:

- Fur cap;

- Field-cap (ladies only);

Podhale hat with a Podhale cloak is worn during official performances.

- Hucul hat;

- Highlander`s hat.

The Air Forces:

- Field-cap;

- Beret (only with battle dress);

- Fur cap;

- Garrison cap (rims of cap: black colour).

The NAVY:

- Garrison cap. Officers and warrant officers (rims of cap: black colour);

- Garrison cap. Privates and N.C.O.'s;

- Fur cap;

- Beret (only with battle dress).
